Pontresiner Quellwasser water preserves the Pontresina glacier water
The Morteratsch Glacier in our mountain village demonstrates the effects of global warming. We remember from our childhood how the glacier’s tongue reached far into the valley. In the past 170 years, however, the Morteratsch Glacier has retreated three kilometres. Every year, it loses an average of 44 metres in length.
A covering of snow lasting the entire summer might reflect the sun’s rays and protect the glacier from the heat of the sun.
This is the plan behind MortAlive, a project which the Engadin-based glacier specialist Felix Keller is promoting with great dedication. His research has shown that under the current conditions, the glacier might even grow (increase in length) within 10 years if 10% of the glacier’s surface were to be covered with snow year-round.
We also care greatly about the Morteratsch Glacier, which is why we are supporting this initiative. This is because the development of the Morteratsch Glacier is demonstrating right on our hotel doorstep, so to speak, that water cannot be taken for granted, even in the “water reservoir” that is Switzerland. Of the purchase price of CHF 4 per carafe of Pontresiner Quellwasser water, CHF 1 is donated to this engineering project to preserve the glacier.
